Christians and Sacred Sex

Every now and then I get a sexual question from a Christian trying to sort through sexual ethics in a moral way. The latest one is about Tantric sex and here is my answer.

I have a question regarding Tantra, sexuality and Christianity. Do you think we can embrace it and if so how can even a latent follower find peace to enjoy it?

My simple understanding of Tantra is that it is an intentional process of removing all of our defenses and fully trusting one's partner (and oneself) in order to...

On Being an Ambassador for Christ in Difficult Times - A Lenten Meditation

This is a difficult time politically right now. Even though most of us in the US are descendants of immigrants we are watching as refugees from war-torn countries are being forced to leave US shores, some to return to starvation and homelessness, others to return to persecution or death due to their sexual orientation. Others turned away at our shores have jobs, homes and animals they left behind as they went to visit relatives in other countries. In addition, there are those in our midst who...

Speaking Truth about Our Bodies & Sexuality

During political season it seems truth-telling quickly moves out of fashion. All that  matters is persuasion - even if it includes lying. Yet, when it comes to sexuality, the Christian church has done its own share of spreading misinformation as gospel truth - even though there is no science behind it or even if science can document its error. For example, the church has said "If you have had multiple sexual partners this negatively impacts your sexuality later." and, "If...

Sex and Religion - Some Great Resources

I am delighted to announce that I am a professor this semester at Lancaster Theological Seminary teaching seminarians about a sex-positive Christianity. As I prepare for the course, “Ministering in Matters of Sexuality” it occurs to me that others might be interested in knowing the sources I am using. So, here they are:

There are three theologians writing in the last few years who delve into the Bible, (Coogan, Knust, and Carr) to weed out the misogyny, patriarchal constructs, mistranslations...

Reading the Bible with Sex-Positive Eyes: 4 Webinars

I am excited to announce we have a four-part webinar titled, “Reading the Bible with Sex-Positive Eyes” to help people who are caught in the trap of religiously-induced sex negativity (shame and guilt) – and to help those who love them. The questions we answer are, “How in God’s name did the church become so antagonistic to the body and sex?”, “What is an alternative to the way the church (usually) teaches sexual morality?, “What are the key biblical passages supporting sex-negativity and ones...

God as Erotic Passion

If you had to put your thoughts on God and sex into one sentence, could you do it? The connection of the sacred and the physical, the intimate link between our soul’s search and our body’s sensual experiences is at the heart of my understanding of Christian spirituality. It is the deepest truth of the incarnation. It is also my life’s passion and the focus of my call to ministry. So when I put these ideas into a sermon my one-line sentence was: “A Veiled Gospel Truth: God as Erotic...

It's Happening Over and Over: It's Embarrassing

For two weeks in a row now sexually conflicted married male Christian pastors have destroyed their careers. Why? Because they did not deal with their sexual needs in a healthy or appropriate way.

First, a Michigan pastor and father of five who had an anti-gay theology was forced to resign when he was outed for doing what he so self-righteously condemned others for doing. The following week a Tennessee pastor who was arrested for absconding with $60,000 of his church’s funds was also...

When Mother Rules

Who says one has to be a female to be a mother? And, why can't we mother without being procreative? I had to find a way to lift the secular Hallmark card-chocolate-and- flowers version of Mothers Day to a celebration that is, instead, Christian. You know the kind, "in Christ there is no male or female," the Christianity that remembers Jesus commended a woman named Mary for stepping out beyond the prescribed gender roles of her day. (Luke 10) Because there are wonderful biblical...

An Interview with Singapore Sexologist Martha Tara Lee

My first thought was "How did she find me half way around the world?" And then I realized that distance is so 20th century! It is no longer a factor that prevents our search for one another. The internet allows us to seek companionship and mentors wherever we are. So I said "Yes, I will be glad to come on your show." Then I immediately thought, Yikes! Would i understand her English okay? Would people in Singapore...or wherever... like me?" (Okay, so I am shallow like...

"I don't believe in God" and other Silliness

I hear this statement quite often and, frankly, I grow quite impatient with it. Of course, I completely understand rejecting the God of our childhood, this Father with a strong resemblance to our earthly parents. Whether this all-powerful God shows affection or is a harsh judge and disciplinarian or not, at first, like our parents, he can do no wrong. Yet, at some point we realize he, like our parents, does not have all the answers and cannot make everything all right.

So when I hear, “I...
