Sex and Religion - Some Great Resources

I am delighted to announce that I am a professor this semester at Lancaster Theological Seminary teaching seminarians about a sex-positive Christianity. As I prepare for the course, “Ministering in Matters of Sexuality” it occurs to me that others might be interested in knowing the sources I am using. So, here they are:

There are three theologians writing in the last few years who delve into the Bible, (Coogan, Knust, and Carr) to weed out the misogyny, patriarchal constructs, mistranslations and errors and, yes, all those yucky sexual stories as well!

Then Cheng, Williams, Gilke in Townes, and Brown Douglas present an integrated look at how racism and culture impact our views of sexuality making it quite explicit that it is impossible to be sex-positive people of faith unless we see how white privilege and racism intersect for bodies of color.

Ellison and Nelson, the former who is a contemporary and the latter whose text is a classic, addresses a moral sexual ethic but move us beyond simply obeying sexual rules that are simply culture to a deeper understanding of love and justice- and, of course, pleasure.

For an application of these ideas, a collection of stories of young people speaking out about sexuality and their Christian journey is found in Godsey and Pickrel. But I can't teach this course without having on hand a trusty sex ed textbook. Yes, I am requiring these soon-to-be-pastors to purchase one and learn some new ideas about the sexual body, its responses – and then report back to the class! It’s gonna be fun! Now here are the resources: Enjoy!
